Imagine starting with a Speedgraphic and flash bulbs as a small town wedding and news photographer and progressing to worldwide travel with the latest digital gear. Join us as Douglas Kirkland shares his remarkable journey, from assignments with Look and Life Magazine during the golden age of 60’s and 70’s photojournalism, photo essays on Greece, Lebanon and Japan, fashion and celebrity work with subjects such as Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor and Marlene Dietrich, and stills on the sets of over one hundred motion pictures, including Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, 2001 A Space Odyssey, Out of Africa, Titanic and Moulin Rouge. A career of this magnitude results from more than a talent for beautiful imagery. How has Douglas weathered the extraordinary changes in business, publications and photographers’ rights and still remained fresh and ahead of the game? One of his secret weapons has been his wife and muse, Françoise. Intimately involved in his work, she has provided another set of eyes, another perspective, and a sound business acumen from having worked at Look, Life Magazine, Sygma and the film business, and she will join Douglas for this special event. His books include Light Years, Icons, Legends, Body Stories, the best selling James Cameron's Titanic and An Evening With Marilyn, just published in the US by Welcome Books in April 2005. Current projects include a book on Milan-based artist Kris Ruhs and a black & white volume, When We Were Young. Douglas Kirkland's fine art photography has been exhibited all over the world. He is a member of the prestigious Canon Explorers of Light, Hewlett Packard's Photo Influencers and an associate member of the American Society of Cinematographers. His awards include a “Lifetime Achievement Award” from the American S.O.C., Photographer of the Year from the PMA and a Lucie Award for Outstanding Achievement in Entertainment Photography from the IPA.
